“We’re not here to judge you”
The lead navigator for Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) at the Central Neighborhood Christian Health Clinics (CNCHC), a safety net health hub serving Los Angeles, had just pulled up into Alta Park when someone knocked on his vehicle’s door shouting “Hey, this guy is suffering from a fentanyl overdose over here!” Luckily, the CNCHC Navigator was carrying Narcan – a lifesaving drug used to treat opioid overdose. He ran into the park and found a man lying on the ground unresponsive.
“The guy was unconscious; his eyes were rolled to the back of his head. His lips were grey, and he had the signs of an overdose,” the CNCHC Navigator recalls. He administered a kit of Narcan— inserted the nozzle inside the man’s nose and gave a quick squeeze- but nothing happened. He then did chest compressions and CPR, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for several minutes. The CNCHC Navigator worked urgently to revive the patient. Getting no response from the comatose man, he then administered another dose of Narcan. This time, the man began breathing.”
Saving people on the brink of dying from a drug overdose may be the most dramatic way that CNCHC is combating the opioid epidemic, but it’s just part of a coordinated strategy involving prevention, harm reduction, and treatment, along with consistent health care and other services. The CNCHC MAT team is part of the Wave 4 of Addiction Treatment Starts Here, or ATSH, a program from the Center for Care Innovations (CCI) which helps curb the opioid epidemic in California.
